Sex-Positivity in the Therapy Space

Writer: Amy SalgadoAmy Salgado

Sexuality is a fundamental aspect of our identities, yet it is often shrouded in silence and taboos. For individuals, navigating their sexual experiences and identities can be confusing and challenging, especially when societal norms and expectations clash with personal desires and expectations. The culture of sex negativity believes that human sexuality is inherently wrong. This restrictive mindset can lead to individuals feeling shame about their bodies and desires. In a sex-positive space, individuals can navigate their sexuality with understanding, acceptance, and empowerment. Sex positivity promotes all consensual sexual experiences and identities, including kink, sex work, self-pleasure, group sex, BDSM, abstinence, and asexuality. It places value on compassion toward each of these experiences and identities and allows individuals to have a safe and non-judgmental space to foster a sense of self-acceptance.
